“Holly”

By Kristina Alessa

I laid in this place
two hundred forty three days

every day a dark night
dreaming of you

The last lullaby you sang to me
was a ballad cry assuring me:

“I’m sorry, but
this is what’s best for you.”

That night, I couldn’t sleep
I kicked and tried to scream

but when your hand refused to feel me
I knew there was nothing I could do

The next day,

your anticipated warm embrace
was replaced by the grasp of cold metal blades

my neck, silently slit
your heart, broken in two

from my home, he ripped me away
lifeless on the table I laid

when you left me, you looked away
that was the first and last time I saw you

when I asked him to give me a name
he shoved me down, and called me “Medical Waste”

my biomedical crib and grave
welcomed to the world without a debut

I laid in this place
for what felt like
two hundred forty three days

every day a dark night
wishing I could still dream of you

"Let Me Be Me"

By N. R. Monarez🦋

Here I am
tiny and meek
How old am I?
Only four weeks
I am small
just a seed
growing within,
I cannot speak,
but my heart -
if you listen -
begins to beat!
Days have passed
blood is flowing
my toes and fingers
now showing.
Your sweet voice
I do cherish,
Mother,
I beg of you,
let me not perish.
What have I done
that you grieve?
That gloved hand,
hand of a thief!
Does he not know
that I have a face,
that I am not
a waste of space?
Mama, did he forget
that I can hear too,
who will protect
both me and you?
I hear your heart
it beats with mine
in this womb so dark
and with all of mankind.
All I want
is to be free
I am a human
Let me be me!

“My dearest little Zita, It was approaching Christmas in 2015 when I first learned your mother was pregnant with you. It had been a year full of endings and loss, and I remember thinking the news a wonderful gift, and the perfect way to end a tumultuous year on a note of hope.”
